HOW THIS CLIMATE AFFECTS YOUR SKIN & HAIR

(Coming Soon) Atacama Sun Plateau

We make things that work better and last longer. Our products solve real problems with clean design and honest materials.

Very dry, sunny conditions can gradually leave skin tight, dull and rough even when temperatures are pleasantly warm rather than extreme. Perspiration evaporates quickly, so dehydration may be easy to overlook during a long tourist day. Use a hydrating serum followed immediately by a moisturising cream containing ceramides, squalane or fatty acids. Protect the lips and exposed areas with balm and choose a moisturising broad-spectrum sunscreen. Cleanse with a mild, non-stripping formula. Hair may become dry, static-prone and brittle, particularly at the ends. Use nourishing conditioner, leave-in hydration and minimise hot styling. Protect both hair and scalp from prolonged direct sunlight and dry wind.

Hydrate, Seal and Shield

Warm temperatures combined with humidity below 30% can remove moisture from the skin surprisingly quickly. During a tourist trip, four to five hours of walking in sunlight, dry wind or dusty surroundings may leave the body and skin dehydrated, particularly when water intake is limited.

Because perspiration evaporates rapidly, travellers may not realise how much fluid they are losing. The skin may produce some oil around the forehead and nose in response to warmth, while the cheeks, lips and eye area become dry. Human studies have reported dryness of the skin and eyes below 30% relative humidity, while controlled research shows that short exposure to low humidity can reduce water in the outer skin layer.

What may happen to your skin:

  • Rapid and less visible water loss: Sweat may evaporate before the face appears noticeably wet.
  • Dryness and tightness: The cheeks, lips, eye area and sides of the nose may feel uncomfortable.
  • Temporary fine lines: Dehydration can make surface lines appear more visible.
  • Rough or flaky texture: Very dry air may affect the smoothness of the outer skin layer.
  • Sensitivity to sun, wind and dust: Environmental exposure may leave the skin feeling irritated or reactive.

The right approach:

The priority is to restore water, support the skin barrier and protect exposed skin. Choose:

  • A hydrating serum containing glycerin, panthenol, beta-glucan or hyaluronic acid
  • A moisturising lotion or cream containing ceramides, squalane or fatty acids
  • A richer balm applied only to particularly dry areas
  • A mild cream or low-foaming cleanser used with lukewarm water
  • Broad-spectrum sunscreen with a moisturising, water-resistant texture
  • Lip protection, shade, a hat and regular water intake

After cleansing at night, apply hydrating serum while the skin is slightly damp, then follow immediately with lotion or cream. Water-based mist used alone may evaporate without providing lasting comfort unless it is followed by a moisturising layer.

The ideal mantra for this weather is: Hydrate, Seal and Shield. Very dry warmth requires more than a lightweight serum. The skin needs water, a protective moisturising layer and dependable defence from sun, wind and rapid evaporation.
